Noticed These At Home
I went home for fall break a couple of weekends ago, and while I was studying for my cell biology at my old desk, I opened up the file drawer on it. In it, I have a hanging folder folder marked “sentimental” in which I have an entire scrapbook worth of old scraps of paper I saved from high school and junior high. I’ve got band concert programs, my valedictorian speech, the brochure I received at the Sears Tower during my junior high trip to Chicago, and so much more. It’s grounding to occasionally return to these scraps. I know times were “tough” in their own way during the years I gathered these scraps, but the human power of retaining the good and forgetting the bad charges this eclectic stash with sentimental value.
I pulled two scraps from the pile to take pictures of. Some of you may recognize them (and for those who do not … it’s pretty self explanatory) as Nils’ invitations to his birthday and graduation parties during the spring and early summer of 2003. If I recall correctly, these party flyers were popular for a while in high school - they were fun little creations, sometimes printed at the school’s expense, that promoted an upcoming social shindig.
Those were good times: only 3 and a half years ago, these events feel like another lifetime. We’ve all grown so much these past years. Expect more reminiscing this coming spring as the successful conclusion of many undergraduate careers approaches.

nice, i've got a folder of sentimental scraps and this prompted me to go through it. as far as stuff that relates to my woodbury days, i have:
1) a postcard from chicago that i bought off a scammer on the street for $10 (he gave me the wrong change for a $20 and disapeared before i could count it)
2) a bumper sticker that says "don't hate me because i'm straight" (elliot gave it to me during that whole straight pride drama)
3) the program from the 1st and only "Blue Light Special" concert.
4) a bunch of lists i made on notebook paper that i would bring to class and share with people. For example, "list of fun words to say", "list of sentences that have probably never been written before", and the oh so controversial "list of why the average girl is stupid".
i'll scan some of this stuff and put it in a facebook album, maybe help you start some sort of mini internet trend of scanning sentimental scraps of memory.

Wow, that's crazy to see those invites again. My Dad actually made the invitation for my graduation party, so the nerdiness there is excusable. As for my 18th bday invite, its funny for me to see that again. Any invite I would make today would be completely different. I think I have a lengthy homevideo stashed somewhere at home from the actual party…that might be worth digging up someday…
Hey Alex, remember the Lord of the Flies video we made in 10th grade English? I found that when I was back home about a month ago. If you ever need to feel humbled, I think our attempts at being funny in that video should do the trick.
