Charlie Brooker, in “How To Report The News” helps us realize that the news produced all around the world everyday is just a parody of a tired format:
“He unfortunately was boring, so to wake you up: this is an animated chart, this is a silhouette representing the average family, and this is a lighthouse keeper being beheaded by a laser beam.”
Well, crap:
There is every reason to believe that the big, grab-bag metro daily that mixes its news in with comics, advice columns, obituaries and recipes, and undertakes an expensive manufacturing and delivery operation each day to put the product on the street, will pass into history. Among the problems faced by Tierney and other publishers is that many of the big thinkers on the periphery of their industry — academics, Web entrepreneurs, former journalists with the wisdom of hindsight — have already moved on. They’re done with paper, ink, trucks, fuel, the whole era.
Don’t read the following excerpt from this news story if you are squeamish. Father beaten protecting daughter at Valleyfair:
A father who tried to protect his 12-year-old daughter after she was groped while leaving Valleyfair amusement park was beaten, stomped in the face and kicked by a group of young men, police said.
The 41-year-old victim, identified in a criminal complaint only by his initials, was unconscious when police arrived. He suffered skull fractures and possible bleeding on the brain, the documents said.

The University of St. Thomas Public Safety Department posted an alert Friday regarding the theft of brass plumbing pipes from men’s restrooms in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the St. Paul campus.
The pipes were stolen Wednesday evening, March 26. That same night, pipes were stolen at Macalester College. Pipes in the Murray-Herrick Campus Center restrooms were tampered with, but not removed.
I debated on whether to post this and then thought “hey, it’s Friday… here we go!” So: Woman stuck after two years on toilet:
An American woman’s body had became attached to her boyfriend’s toilet after she sat on it for two years, police in Kansas said.
“She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body,” said Bryan Whipple, the sheriff of Ness County.
It appeared Pam Babcock’s skin had grown around the toilet seat, he added. “It is hard to imagine. … I still have a hard time imagining it myself.”
I’ve stopped updating my recent post about the bridge collapse, as information can reliably be located at many places online. One particularly useful website to follow is the Star Tribune’s Ad-Free dedicated page covering the collapse and all the associated, from the human stories to the engineering work to assess the cause.
I don’t know if those of you in the area will be coming to tumbledry for updates, but here’s what I can gather about the bridge collapse so far. I’ll try to keep this updated with facts as they roll in.
Today, August 1, between 6 and 6:15pm, the north and southbound lanes of 35W collapsed at the bridge over the Mississippi River. Here is a Google Map of the location. The bridge, built in 1967, was undergoing routine repairs to the bridge deck this summer, but not to the underlying structural girders. Crews working to repair the bridge were on site at the time of the collapse; their status is currently unknown. A school bus full of children was on the bridge during the collapse; they were all evacuated safely from the back of the bus. At least one casualty has been confirmed, though I have heard reports of up to 3 dead. At around 7:30pm, I heard reports of 16+ injured.
CNN is guilty of massively weird/overblown/tabloid-like headlines on their front page. Small pockets of people noticed this, discussed it, and then a formalized effort was made to point out the stupidest and least news worthy headlines. And so WTFCNN? was born. Here are some of their highlights from the past week:

Don’t get me wrong, I do like WCCO Channel 4 News. It is the number one rated newscast in the Twin Cities, as it well should be. Consider one of its competitors, Fox 9 news, which has reported on (and aired “teaser” portions promoting) such life-changing issues as school bus drivers not showing up to work, rusty fire hydrants, and what your pets do when you leave the house. The pets piece was actually advertised on the radio the day that ground-breaking investigative masterpiece aired. Oh, and if you are wondering how Fox 9 cracked the mystery of what pets do: hidden cameras. Wow.
Slate: Rebellion of the Talking Heads - Slate continues to impress me; here they tackle the multi-faceted issues in New Orleans from the perspective of the news reporters “in the trenches” down there actually doing some great reporting.
