The calmodulin protein has two sites where it binds calcium ions in the cell; after it has bound them, it serves as a signal to other proteins of calcium levels within said cell. As an introduction to some of the basic conformational changes proteins undergo, we covered this figure in our cell biology slides yesterday.
Today in quantitative chemistry, the lecture topic was the difference between detectors in common spectrography equipment. One detector (the photomultiplier tube) is extremely sensitive, while the other (the photo diode array) is significantly less sensitive (but cheaper). So the professor proposed the following question:
Here’s a new one: I went through two classes today, and then came back to my dorm room. I looked at my watch as I was coming in the door and wondered aloud: “Did my watch stop or something?” It was way too early. I was so focussed on the lab report I had to do that I had forgotten I had only been to 2 classes instead of 3. It doesn’t end there, though. Oh no, this Monday had more Alex-mocking to do.

Yesterday, I has the privilege of witnessing the fastest cell-phone-turn-off in the history of panicked faux-paus committing individuals. Indeed, only 3 or 4 notes (notes!) of the beginning of an annoying ring sung out until the individual responsible (a business major in the third row) instinctively flinched, silencing the sound. It was almost so short that the pause in the class was everyone checking their sub-conscious, wondering if it was just a random synapse firing that had caused them to think of what they did.
This university is not known for huge lectures (though at other schools, 200+ lectures are not as bad as one would think), but there are indeed enough people in the larger general lecture classes to be annoying. Now, the occasional polyphonic power pop cell phone ring does not bother me, nor does the eternally conjested man somewhere behind me to my right, or even the hoodie-wearing upper level folk who show up for the comfortable seats and dim lighting that their dorm rooms apparently do not afford. Sometimes, though, there is One. The single person who believes it is their God-given right to disrupt the class in a stunningly stupid way.
