Recently, I was waiting in our dental school reception area to meet with Patient Financing and I opened up the February New Yorker. In it was a brilliant essay about the intersection of society and alcohol by Malcolm Gladwell, entitled Drinking Games. Gladwell’s anecdotal and anthropological evidence reveals that the effects of alcohol are not uniform — our reaction to being drunk is heavily influenced by… what we are expected to do when drunk. Here’s an awesome quote:

I recently wrote about the absurdity of using social networking photos as indisputable evidence in a piece called Puritanical, Tyrannical, Overreaching Public Schools. I centered my argument around events at Eden Prairie High School, events which have been essentially repeated at Woodbury High School (my alma mader). I’ll keep writing the same journal until something changes, I guess. Here’s the story this time around: instead of controversial pictures being reported to the school by an anonymous meddling informant (as they were at Eden Prairie), they were shown by a student at Woodbury High School as part of a health presentation about underage drinking. The common reaction is: “wow those students sure are stupid for putting these pictures online, then presenting them to a class.” Such a statement is an oversimplification of the situation and it conflates stupidity with naïveté. Allow me to explain.

I don’t consider myself particularly gifted in the art of conversation. My one hard and fast rule is to avoid saying too much or revealing a lot of my personality; I would rather most people saw me as shy and reserved, instead of judging me on a sliver of myself that is likely misrepresentative of the whole. This default reserved behavior is important in surviving when speaking to or interacting with a novel group, where you can feel the judgments flying back and forth like biscuits in a food fight.
That much for wine? - Been meaning to post this for a while, it’s from kottke; about this writer and an unbelievable bottle of wine.

At the starting line to the Life Time Fitness Torchlight 5k yesterday, I looked down at my race number and noticed a coupon at the end of the race for a free Michelob Ultra low calorie look at how we can appeal to the exercising crowd and isn’t it amazing how little flavor there is in this beer. Recalling how I had felt at the end of the race last year (not too hot), I turned to the guy next to me and asked, “How could anyone want beer after a run?” I guess I assumed that those standing at the front of a crowd of 2500 runners would not be the type to pound back beer after a run. Instead, he said absolutely nothing and stared through my head as if it wasn’t there. To Mr. In The Race Zone, I say: thanks for making the beginning of my race memorable. “Screw talking to people,” I thought, feeling the tension in everyone around me rise as the starting horn was lifted into the air.
