Dear Mr. Watterson

Help the indie film “Dear Mr. Watterson - a cinematic exploration of Calvin & Hobbes” meet it’s production budget by donating (follow the link for details). They’re over half of the way to their $12,000 goal — I hope to be able to contribute, myself. A bit about the film:

Dear Mr. Watterson is a film that will look to the readers and fans of Calvin & Hobbes to tell the story of the strip and its creator. As we explore the art and impact of Bill Watterson through this unique perspective, the undying appreciation and love of Calvin & Hobbes and the man behind it will be evident in the anecdotes, stories, and memories shared by readers of the strip and friends and colleagues of Mr. Watterson.

This sounds like a great film, I’m excited to see what this little round of fundraising will do.

I have always heard that Bill Watterson is a very private man who has always hated the attention brought on by Calvin and Hobbes. I am wondering if he has signed off on this film. As much as I love Calving and Hobbes (and I do, I really really do) I would never want to give money to a project that Mr. Watterson feels is a violation of his intelectual property rights or his privacy.

I’ve heard the same about Bill Watterson, Dan. However, I think it would be naïve of him to expect complete isolation from his readers. His work is universally praised by critics and fans, and a celebration of Calvin and Hobbes in cinematic form is, I think, an appropriate expression of appreciation.

I still go back and forth: the website for the film might indicate that the filmmakers interviewed Watterson (the hints they dropped are ambiguous). But, I read the Wikipedia article about him… and man oh man does he dislike interviews. I would think, however, that Watterson or his editor would send out a cease and desist type letter to the filmmakers if they were unauthorized.

I’m leaning towards contributing.
