Sufjan Stevens

The Snow Patrol song Hands Open has a little lyrical twist that always intrigued me:

Put Sufjan Stevens on, and we’ll play your favorite song,
Chicago bursts to life in your sweet smile remembers you

I always wondered who this Sufjan Stevens was, and what his/her music was like. Well, Sufjan is a he, and the music is very good. The really clever part of that Snow Patrol lyric is that “Chicago” is Sufjan Stevens’ most popular song. It’s pretty spectacular; a really really unique sound. Give it a listen.

Are you serious?!? SERIOUSLY!?!

I play Sufjan Stevens ALL THE TIME and I’ve tried to tell you about him ALL THE TIME.

We’re fighting right now. Grrrrr.

I probably never looked him up because I couldn’t imagine how to spell “Sufjan” — it sounds like there’s a silent xueß in there or something. He needs a more accessible first name like “Cat” or “S”.

“Sufjan” is actually pretty cool.

You just wouldn’t think that it is spelled phonetically.

I implore you to buy or download (I did both) the “Songs For Christmas” 5 volume album Sufjan put out last winter. Each volume is a private album that Sufjan concocted for friends and family as a Christmas gift over the past 6 years (he missed one year when he was working on his Illinois album). His rendition of O Come O Come Emmanuel (he has 3 versions over the 5 volumes) is fucking brilliant. Also, since first hearing of Sufjan upon his “Illinois” release, I decided I had to learn the banjo. I’ve got the banjo, but the skills still aren’t there.
