A canned drink called “Unagi Nobori,” or “Surging Eel,” made by Japan Tobacco Inc., hit the nation’s stores this month just ahead of Japan’s annual eel-eating season, company spokesman Kazunori Hayashi said Monday.
“It’s mainly for men who are exhausted by the summer’s heat,” Hayashi said of the beverage, believed to be the first mass-produced eel drink in Japan.

Well, I hate to disappoint, but I haven’t tried this stuff yet. In fact, I haven’t even seen it in a store yet. Of course, I’ll let you know as soon as I do. As far as grilled eel goes, I do enjoy it quite a bit. In fact, I recommend searching some out at your local Japanese eatery. Whether it’s a legit stamina-building food… perhaps in winter. But it’s a fairly oily dish, and the sauce is pretty heavy, and you’re eating it with hot rice, so I don’t find it terribly conducive to feeling energized in the summer heat. And not to nit-pick, but the name… I’m not sure if that translation comes from a press release, or the foreign press circuit in Tokyo, or somewhere else, but as far as I know, “surge” is a pretty liberal interpretation of “nobori.” I think the press is using it for that “gosh aren’t those Japanese just wacky” angle. I would have said “Eel Boost” myself, but I’m hardly a translator.
