P-Chem

I am scared of p-chem. Literally scared. It is not only difficult, but sometimes it makes almost no sense at all. This is the first class where I have sat in lecture and thought “this makes little to no sense.” I guess I’ll have to try even harder.

Back to it, then.

Well … in case you are curious, the order of differentiation of the van der Waals equation of state does not, in fact, matter - therefore the derivative of the function is an exact differential.

I don't know if I'll be able to bring that kind of mathematical hurt on the test. Another note: I just said "mathematical hurt."

If you need help w/ the math, ask.

The math for P-chem just sounds like it would be scary. I mean, a page long formula that defines where you should expect to find an electron around a single proton? What good does that do you? Just tell me where it is exactly, and I'd be happy, and don't start with that Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle garbage, that's just code for scientists being lazy.

John

Alex. I will give you five dollars if you can prove how fast electrons are moving when my popcorn pops. ;)

Thank you, Katy - I may be calling you with some partial derivative questions, but a lot of it is recalling things from a math class from a while ago. :) Happy trees!

John, we are not yet at quantum dynamics (I think that's what it's called … but it's predicting location/speed of electrons) as that is second semester. It looks like I'll be incapable of spouting off to you about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle … but you never know. I'll be sure to let you know if we do tackle that.

John, I can't tell you about the electrons, but I could give you some darn good equations regarding the heat transfer during the popping process. Let me know!

Ah, yes, recall is all fine and well until they start to require you to remember things you were never taught, as in: "oh, I'm supposed to know that? I learned that in what class? Oh, that one … yeah, that's really helpful — EXCEPT THAT IT'S NOT."

Never mind me — I'm sure you'll do fine. Just keep up the hard work :)

Well, yeah, that's a good point - they seem to expect that I recall with near perfect fidelity this math. A simple review in the back of the book, no matter how well put together, simply does not make me feel comfortable with the stuff. You're right though, hard work should hopefully make it all work out.
