Meanwhile, girls learn from an early age that it is rude to reject boys. They learn to “let them down easily” and never humiliate them. They learn to give other people what they want, and to put their own desires second — especially when it comes to sex. And few girls get any sex education, either at school or from the culture they consume, that encourages them to think about sex in terms of what they actually desire, as opposed to how they will be perceived by others.
Recent abstinence-only curricula have included messages like, “Girls need to be aware they may be able to tell when a kiss is leading to something else. The girl may need to put the brakes on first in order to help the boy,” and, “girls need to be careful with what they wear, because males are looking! The girl might be thinking fashion, while the boy is thinking sex.”
Even when girls learn comprehensive sex ed, they frequently don’t learn how to ask for what they want, or even how to think about what that is. “We, as a nation, are uncomfortable with women having pleasure,” Lynn Barclay, president and CEO of the American Sexual Health Association, told Bustle in 2015.
I always love these articles about “costly signaling” — the pursuit of real, not-fakable signals of your mating fitness. Take a look at Sex and shopping – it’s a guy thing - New Scientist (emphasis mine):
Women are surprisingly effective at reading personality from a face - Women are better than expected at determining if a man is good for short term or long-term relationship … simply by reading their face.
Wired: Viagra for Women - “Flush with success in the fight against “erectile dysfunction,” the pharmaceutical industry set out to develop Viagra for women. First, researchers simply gave women the same pill that worked so well for men. The good news: The drug does pump a woman’s genitals full of blood. But it won’t necessarily get her frisky.”
This movie was so dirty. Holy man. I know I would have been squirming constantly if I had seen it near anybody 5 or more years older than myself. Or younger. Given that, it was relentlessly funny. The only issue with the humor was going into it expecting so much. I mean, this is Brick, in a starring role. It was one of those “i’m laughing but it might just be because I want to think this is funny things” at the beginning of the movie. Then, I stopped thinking of my expectations and just laughed.
Wow. You guys managed to set the all-time record for most comments in one post on that last one. Looks like my site is soaked in sexual inuendo, and I did not even know it! In the next few weeks, I will work on a replacement, decidedly non-spermy graphic to punctuate the end of that horizontal rope divider at the top of each page. Everyone weighed in with some absolutely hilarious pieces of text, including the first ever link posted to the comments, by Richard Roche: an awesome graphic depicting the red end caps to be ovaries in addition to other graphical illustrations. Incidentally, this was strikingly similar to another image used by Mykala to illustrate a similar point.
I have said very little about this new design (it was whipped up in a frenzy of about one month), but I have received very positive and constructive opinions on it. It was a decently large pile of work and I have a few small things left to tweak (namely, making QuickMail scroll better) until I rest for an extended time from designing anything online. Nevertheless, to continue in the current feedback-from-readers vein, I wish to post this note from my girlfriend.
