43Folders is a website dedicated to the finer points of organization, task tracking, and goal-completion. As such, an essay about the huge value of underachievement would seem orthogonal to the site’s goals. However, the ideas mesh quite well with the larger fabric of 43Folders; plus, this is easily the best blog post I have read in a long while (the vocabulary alone is perfection)… the mythology and philosophy references don’t hurt, either. When nothing is sure, everything is possible.

You Picked the Wrong Day to be Crappy - Ostensibly, this is a post about football, but the title, “You Picked the Wrong Day to be Crappy,” applies to so many things, that I simply had to share.
Mykala directed me to some information that she saw on a recent Oprah show about happiness called “How Happy are You?” She had some good quotes from it.
We have beliefs about ourselves and our lives, and our perception gathers evidence in support of these beliefs. If you believe that your life isn’t satisfying or that you are a failure, you will look around for ways that this is true. If you believe that life is fulfilling and you are a worthy and significant person, you’ll find evidence to prove this case.
Zorba’s response embodies a supreme appreciation for the richness of life and the inevitability of all its dilemmas, sorrows, tragedies, and ironies. His way is to “dance” in the gale of the full catastrophe, to celebrate life, to laugh with it and at himself, even in the face of personal failure and defeat. In doing so, he is never weighed down for long, never ultimately defeated either by the world or by his own considerable folly.
Mykala: You need a haircut.
Me: You need an attitude adjustment.
Mykala: Do you think I could get one of those at the salon? “I’d like a massage and an hour-long attitude adjustment, please.”
Me: That will be $40 dollars.
Mykala: Ha.
Me: That would be so invaluable. I would pay for that once a month.
I hope that the kids, while they sing along to my songs or dance to it, feel that life is not that bad at all. Even for just a minute.

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus; and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.
— Bruce Lee
Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

We all want a home. We all want a place to come home to. We all need a place where we are loved and where we are safe. We all cry. We all laugh. We all love.
The why’s the when’s the where’s and the how’s don’t matter anymore. Can you see that? Can you peer through the muck that this world throws on your windshield and see the truth? If you find out how, please tell me.
