Medtronic and NPR

Whenever I tune into NPR, I inevitably hear the part of the program where they announce the “sponsored by” companies. I usually hear this:

… and brought to you by Medtronic. Medtronic, saluting graduates in the fields of science and health.

All I can think is, “Saluting the graduates, yes. Hiring them, no.”

My brother is currently employed by Medtronic. and works on the electrical circuitry of their pacemakers, but that’s probably in an entirely different field than you would be applying to. Which department of Medtronic would you have worked in? Which reminds me, what was your major again? I know you want to go into dentistry, but I forgot your major……because I’m an awful friend.

Certainly, it’s a great company, and I would gladly work for them. However, in my position, you have two options at Medtronic: work in an underpaid internship for a summer and pray for an opportunity… or get 4+ years of experience elsewhere and then reapply.

Those years could be graduate work (I believe that is what your brother did? … though, the EE side is different than Biochem) or experience at another company. Haha, and yeah, my major is Biochemistry - no worries.

Biochem sounds like a good fit for Medtronic’s line of work. My bro has thus far completed one year of grad school, but he had past experience with General Electric (internship). It looks like experience counts almost as much as education in the scientific fields as well as the film industry. Which is why I will get nowhere in my field as well once I graduate.
