That isn't just a cool vase, it is a bottle of wine Alex. And it happens to be a "Sirah". My best guess is it's an attempt at the European grape "Syrah." However, August Briggs apparently is a vineyard in the Napa Valley… California. Typical Syrah is a rich, fruity wine, with a spice kicker. However, the grape loses it's kick in foreign areas. Best looks for Syrah grapes is Europe (in the Rhone Valley) and later in Australia in isolated regions (noted as Shiraz there). Based on climate, I would say that that glass, before it became a vase… was medium-bodied, fruity, with little or no spice, a little dry, but perfect with a nice steak dinner.

Actually, it's quite a full bodied wine…
My parents stayed at this vineyard among others in October, as my aunt is the wine sommelier at the Paris Hotel in Vegas. They actually stayed at the owner's home (and ate and drank very well)! :) But it's cool that you're trying to learn so much about wine… most people our age just want to drink it!

Uh oh! Looks like John's got some more studying to do. Generally I don't like wine. I think it tastes horrible, like vinegar. I have had a few that aren't so bad, but as a whole, my experiences have not been good. Maybe because wine is not meant to be consumed in large amounts simultaneously with other varieties of alcohol such as beer, vodka, and SoCo. I would like to become a passive wine drinker someday though, it has a class above other alcoholic beverages. Although if you are really looking for class, then all you need is a vodka martini, shaken not stirred.
Just a guess, poor at best :) I don't know why I like wine but I do. That is very cool that your parents were able to visit those vineyards. I have thought about doing such things since I've become enamored with wine. Thank you for letting me know though, I hope it was good before it became empty. Which is a problem that happens all too often. I understand your feelings towards wine Nils. I was hesistant to continue trying it because I hadn't had much luck. Eventually you find what works, one you just fall in love with. Personally, I like trying to pair my meals with wine. I think it is so cool how a wine can change the whole experience. I always thought it was just another drink, but it can make food come to life. Until our next wine lesson excursion, "Drink in the moments that take your breath away. "
