Media Munchies

Well. I might as well list the media I am consuming/will consume in the future, the recent things I have bought, and things I have given lately. I am currently listening to “Glasgow Love Theme” from the movie Love Actually. It’s making me rather sad, but it is on repeat for a reason I can not really articulate. And by “can’t” I mean I am both unable and unwilling to delve that deeply into my head. I’d rather return to reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Alternatively, I would like to watch a movie and cry over it. Or simply cry. You know? I think you do.

Katy moves to her apartment tomorrow. I finally finished her birthday/housewarming present (and yes her birthday was April 10th, and no, I really do not have an excuse) this evening. I picked out a white t-shirt and a white little hoody deal and ironed-on an Apple Computer logo (in green, her favorite color) on the t-shirt and a nice NASA logo onto the hoody. Turned out tremendously. Glad I could send her off with a token of my esteem. We’re taking my uncle’s truck and two packed vans to move (maybe a car, too). It is strange to see Katy move further out into the real world; I remember so clearly moving her in when she was a freshman, before the life-changing mess of college had hit either one of us. Visiting will her in the new digs will be fun, though.

Furthermore, I am burning Nils’ movie onto ten (10) DVD’s. It is a funny movie: I may comment on it in depth in the future. My favorite quote: “I mean, we work out so much, we barely have time to kill people!”

I bought a ring. It is a thick band of sterling silver, with a cross engraved on it. Flora and fauna wrap around the remainder of the outside. Katy: “I didn’t know you were that devout of a Christian.” Fair enough. Let me explain a couple of things. I don’t see a big distinction between different religions, I place the emphasis on being a good person. If you go to church, follow Buddha, don’t go to church, it really does not make a huge difference to me, as long as you strive for honesty, integrity, and genuine human kindness. Furthermore, those who choose more external ways to express their faith are not, to me, the most committed individuals. When faith begins from the inside, when it is shown in subtle ways, is when it is true, deep, and real. I wanted a silver ring, then I realized I could get one with a cross on it - it began as a purely cosmetic thing and evolved into the realization that I could get a helpful reminder to wear on my finger. I never wanted to show-off or brag to anybody about my beliefs. The ring is not meant to hammer my belief’s into anyone, or to serve as a billboard proclaiming my faith. It makes me feel good, it reminds me how to be. I do not want to sound defensive, (I certainly don’t feel that way … arguing about religion/faith is absurd) just thought I’d get this all down for posterity.

Get this, within the next couple of months we get to hear a new Cake album, a new All-American Rejects album, and a new Jimmy Eat World album. Can you believe that? I think I am most excited to hear the new All-American Rejects. I was addicted to almost all the songs of their first album, it helped me a lot after I got dumped. Incidentally, the music has evolved to fill a different place in me now: music to sing along to. The collection is growing, but this is one of the top albums to sing with right now. Yes yes yes. Hey - you - yes you in the back … no, not you with the tongue stud - yes you - go buy these albums when they are out!

Hindsight Is Cool

The newest trend coming into Sophmore year of college seems to be “trash the hometown.” I get the sense that everyone is too eager to move on, head out, climb up, and leave behind. “Yeah, college feels more like home” still rings false to my ears. Not everyone thinks they have outgrown the place in which they grew up, that they are too good for it, but comments with those sentiments seem to burst forth with startling frequency. “I know college is where I really belong.”

How?

Ninety-nine percent of the people who say things to that effect have been at college precisely nine months; far less time than they have lived in their hometown. Just because there are so many restrictions lifted on their lives at college doesn’t automatically make the situation better. How many people can honestly argue that sharing a closet-sized room with a stranger trumps coming home to a big soft bed in a big roommate-less room? How many are willing to say that caf food is piles better than home cooking? (Though, there may be piles of it.) Have you ever heard anyone say “Gee, I sure am glad I’m at college, so I can do my laundry. I hated not being able to wash my clothes at home.” Seriously.

Look, I’ll give you this: college is a time of life-changing decisions, lifetime friendships, and never-ending piles of fun. However, nothing necessitates the declaration that living in such a homogenous group (twenty-somethings paying for an education) trumps the significantly more diverse real world. There are things to be learned from both places; do not abandon one for the other.
