Tanker bag

Tanker bag - A bag made from the cloth used for nautical sails. Therefore, ridiculously strong. Way overpriced.

Cufflinks out of NYC tokens

Cufflinks out of NYC tokens - Very cool. Way too overpriced.

Turbo Minivan

Turbo Minivan - I’d just like to point out how unbelievably cool it is that this guy turbocharged the same model as my first car: an old-school 1980s Dodge Caravan / Plymouth (Chrysler) Voyager.

Fate the Blindsider

The closest I ever came to dying was over two years ago. Like many teenage near-death experiences, this one was entirely unexpected and so quickly recovered from that it barely registered as a blip on my adolescent radar screen. And yet, looking back now, I can frame the event in my mind: an inch or two one way, a half second more slowly or quickly, and I would exist either in a vegetative state or as a memory of existence, whose tenure on earth would be marked in cold marble on a sunny hill near a church in Woodbury.

After you complete a set of bench presses, you “rack” a long bar on a steel support above you. This places the center of the bar directly above your forehead. One workout, I set the bar down carelessly, resting its left side on the bevelled edge of the rack, rather than securely on it. As I rocked myself into a sitting position, I felt a 185 pound bar graze the back of my head, crashing like a piledriver to the floor. Had I gotten up a moment later, the bar would have directly met my forehead as I rocked upright, and would have slammed by head back to the bench, concentrating its entire downward momentum on a single point on my skull.

This story is not interesting because I did not die. However, it got me thinking just how much I take my life for granted. True, humans are not built to take joy with each new day - we are built to assume, gloss over, take for granted … but these are traits worth overcoming.

I have decided to remind myself of life. Not as some heavy-handed philosophical exercise, but as a way to be Happy. That reminder will take a musical form: I will play more piano, record another album, love the gift of 15 years of playing that I have been given. Plan your own reminder, too - we’ll try this together.

Best Firefox skin I have used in some time - Apple’y, customizable, light colored. A great replacement since my GraphiteFox theme is outdated.

Pronounce GIF correctly, dangit - I was right!

Summing

I think Alex Oray summed up the zeitgeist of school right now:

How many opportunities does a person get to bomb 2 exams back to back? Cherish every moment folks.

True insight, he has.

Ghost Writer - Who remembers this from when they were growing up? It could not have been that good … but memories, people.

Wow

Time without updating the website sure flies when you are busy with school. That said, I am indeed busy with school. I have to hand it to mother nature, though - today is a perfect winter day. Big fluffy flakes have been gently falling all day, the air is cold but not too windy, Christmas music from the little cafe in the science building can be heard echoing off the concrete floors, spreading cheer to floors above and below. I will be doing homework between now and the beginning of Christmas break, but nevertheless I am sure something exciting will happen to me that I will be able to write about. In the meantime, here’s a quick Dane Cook bit I had to type. (My favorite is the part about the exhaust.)

Sometimes you meet somebody and the second you meet them, the second you are introduced, you just get that feeling, just like you hate each other’s guts. I happened to have had that situation recently, I was driving around in the CT 2004 and I was driving by Burger King (or the BK Lounge, as I’ve been known to call it … I have a history of that) and when I saw that sign glowing in the night, I thought to myself, “I’d love a chicken Sangwich right now” … [shuts up a heckler in the audience] … I started thinking about the chicken Sangwich inside there, and soon it could be inside here, and that filled me with glee. So I pulled in and I went inside to order my chicken Sangwich and this is what happened between me and the counter help there. Ok, I’m standing there and I’m waiting, and I don’t know this guy yet, we have not met in the past. And, um, I’m thinking about my chicken Sangwich, that’s all I’m thinking about. And then I look up at the menu, and I have to say this, I don’t know who the photographer is who does the french fry shots … he’s fantastic. He’s fantastic, he’s the best! Just the way the fries are shootin’ up outta there, they’re dancing out of that box, like they’ve just been freed from some kind of purgatory. Those fries look like a glamour shot, they’re just fantastic.

So I’m standing there and I’m thinking Chicken Sangwich, now I’m startin’ to think Fresh Hot French Fries in my belly as well. And it’s making me feeling very proud. So I get up to the guy and, right away, there’s that vibe … it’s that same vibe that you get with any auto mechanic you’ve ever dealt with. Even though you’re listening and nodding, in your head you’re like “this guy is f*ckin’ me big time.” You just believe whatever they say; “Yeah we had to replace the roof on your car, it resented the rest of the car, so we replaced that. Also, there was a tiny unicorn in your exhaust and he was jumping and poking holes in your exhaust, and he was sh*tting in your filters as well. So we had to get that out of there.” Wow, thank you very much. I did not know that there was a tiny mythological animal jumping around in there … that’s very dangerous. Sh*tting in filters, no way. Especially with a road trip coming up, that’s very dangerous. That little son of a b. How much is that? Seven thousand? I was going to suggest, I’d like to pay seven thousand’ish, I’d love to pay for that.

Anyhow. I hope you are all well - let’s charge through to the end of school for this year!
