Leaving Our First Home

The lid of the seventy year old stove creaked reluctantly as I pushed it up and ducked my head under. Dust and the smell of distant eggshells wafted up as I relit the stove with the long reach matches from our landlord Mary Alice. A few years ago, when we woke up to the unpleasant smell for almost a week straight, we had learned the pilots tended to get blown out by gentle breezes. Now, this little piece of knowledge was to get filed in the “no longer useful” category in my brain, along with bits like how to keep the sink and tub drains draining (never use without at least one trap), when to change the screens out for the storm windows (earlier than you think; the days quickly get cold), how to avoid the water hammer (turn the water on more than you think you need), how much to turn down the heat (a Pendleton and a down comforter were musts), how to stay cool when the power went out in the summertime (good luck… meditation?), the trick to shutting the front door (humidity dependent), which outlets dropped cord prongs from them like leaves in fall, and which appliances tripped the breaker if used in concert.

A Few Days

Two days ago, we saw a live puppet theater in the backyard of a Prospect Park neighbor on Franklin Avenue.

The title of the production was “The Adventures of Juan Bobo”, and the second half of it, which we caught, was really fun. The live accordion player made it really… lovely, too.

Royal Day Off

We got up this morning and saw part of the royal wedding extravaganza. We both have the day off, and celebrating with a little view into another world was a fun way to start. After dying Easter Eggs late last night, we headed off to the grocery store to buy some British food (crumpets, Earl Grey tea).

Wedding Cookies

Genius:

For as long as anyone here can remember, wedding receptions in Pittsburgh have featured cookie tables, laden with dozens of homemade old-fashioned offerings like lady locks, pizzelles and buckeyes. For weeks ahead — sometimes months — mothers and aunts and grandmas and in-laws hunker down in the kitchen baking and freezing. Then, on the big day, hungry guests ravage the buffet, piling plates high and packing more in takeout containers so they can have them for breakfast the next day.

The Impossible Cool

And….. best new blog ever: the impossible cool.

Waiting for wedding envelopes to print!

Bachelor Party

Just returned from a wonderful night out (aka bachelor party) with my great friends Matt, Steve, John, Nils, Dan, Ryan, and Chris! We went to a great place in Maple Grove called Dave & Buster’s — featuring food, bar, and full gaming area. I came home with the prizes from the night — Gophers fan hand, Dave & Buster’s novelty soccer ball, and poker chips + cards + box! Awesome! So, it was exactly the kind of night I had in mind — nobody puked, nobody was naked, and everybody will be able to get into work tomorrow! I need to get out with these guys more often.

Wedding Weather

78° and sunny for Saturday. Keep it up, weather!

Rains

It’s raining outside (without thunder) and Mykala is gone on a long Iowa dance working trip, followed closely by a camping trip. When she’s back, we’ll be close close to our wedding wedding. In the meantime, I just wish she was here… we’ve been enjoying the too-short minutes we’ve had together lately, and this is quite the unwelcome interruption. I’ll go on and finish the last of my summer classes, and she’ll take care of work things.

Invitations

This afternoon, we mailed out 99 cotton envelopes with wedding invitations in them. This is happening! I’ll post the design of the invitations in about a week, so I won’t ruin the surprise for everyone.

Wedding Invitations

Wedding invitations are currently kicking my butt. We’ve gone through so many iterations of the design: damask, flower motif, outline, pen and ink, maps, initials, script, serif… and finally ended up with something not bad. Then there was printing… pantone colors, letterpress, offset, laser, inkjet. The options were too expensive, or wrong paper, or couldn’t go borderless.

Semester End

I am now officially a D2. Physiology final grade == A! Now off to taste wedding entrées with my lovely fiancée. Tonight, Legally Blonde the Musical. Tomorrow, more things!

Originally, I said “Tomorrow, the world”, but I’m trying to avoid clichéd language in my writing. Good luck with that. See what I did there?

Not Enough Energy for Transitions

I asked a fellow dental student of mine what he was doing this weekend. “Going to get a cavity filled.”

Mykala and I are busy, busy. She’s gone all weekend for a dance competition and I have a straight set of finals starting Monday. It’s times like these, when you think you haven’t the time, when you absolutely must take a moment to make your significant other feel special in any way you can. It’ll save your relationship, so you can weather the times you both forget to nurture.
