KeyCue - Now this is brilliant: an application that shows you all the keyboard shortcuts for your current application. It’s like a little training program to help you use your computer faster … no more searching for shortcuts.
Visual Task Tips - Install this program, and when you hover your mouse over the task bar, it’ll give you a thumbnail preview of the represented window. Very useful. What caught my eye was this is extremely lightweight: just 90kb!
Alternative to Windows Media Center - Not simple enough right now, but a very good contender if you don’t want to buy Media Center.
Best FTP Server - What’s the nice thing about running an FTP server on your computer? You can access your files anywhere you are online. Great for last minute projects.
A better Alt Tab Task Switch - Upgrade your alt-tab experience with screenshots of what you are alt-tabbing into. Potentially great for those who do a lot of IM’ing.
FileZilla FTP - The FTP client I should have been using this whole time (ie 5 years with an outdated copy of WS_FTP).
The best personal organization tool - This is Backpack. Here’s what it is. Imagine this: an interactive planner containing your different to-do lists, images, resources, calendar, reminders, and contacts. Then, make it shareable with more than one person. Plus, Backpack follows you everywhere because it is a lightweight web application.
AIM anywhere - That is, any major chat client anywhere on your browser. Amazing. I’ll be making this recommendation to anyone.
Firefox: Always Use Protection - What a great wallpaper.
Best OS X Third Party Software - What-a-list. I’ll be referring to this if I ever get a Mac.

Now Mykala said that I was posting this simply to say “look at me, I fixed her computer lalala I am amazing …” However, I am not posting the following log of an actual conversation of an OnStar … shoot wait no it’s not one of those weird commercials … this is a real world example of the badness and goodness of the internet. You see, Mykala’s computer was rather thoroughly infected by some guitar tabbing sites visited through internet explorer. I record the following technical details to help anyone facing a similar situation. First, if you use Internet Explorer, you have to understand that it is so useful for online banking and Outlook Express (what St. Thomas uses) because it is tightly integrated to a core operating system technology called ActiveX (an oversimplification, true). ActiveX, when exploited, gives hackers the ability to install programs on your computer without your consent or knownledge. I finally changed AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) to look the way I want it to. Anyone who uses AIM for Windows knows that they are locked into the appearance. The jarring yellow icons and similarly colored highlights are the only option. While one can download add on software (such as AIMutation), there are more elegant and less invasive ways to change the appearance. You see, all I wanted to do was change the awful highlights. My success inspired me to go further and change some icons as well.
