But the idea that I should only pay for things that benefit me directly is anathema to me. Every single thing on that list benefits me in some way, because it benefits the community around me. Kids’ education matters not because they’re my kids, but because education matters, in general. I might not need rescue services in the woods out in the corner of the county, but some day, maybe I would.
Early in the evening yesterday, I was tired. I hadn’t really had a good weekend of sleeping in, my sleep deficit was high. So, a little before 5pm, I went upstairs and went to sleep. 4 hours later, I woke up. Mykala got home, we chatted and ate, and I went back to bed to sleep for 7 more hours. When I sleep that long, I end up with a lot of REM sleep in the morning. Conversely, when I was quite sleep deprived during my first few years of school, I recalled my dreams exceedingly rarely.

I think Mykala found dooce.com via kottke.org a few years back, and I just realized something about why I like the site so much. You see, dooce (a.k.a. Heather Armstrong) has a hilarious writing style regardless of subject (dog, husband, daughter, et al.), great photography, and a devoted community… but that doesn’t really get at the essence. That essence is: Heather has unbelievably good taste.
