Waste Management Open

I first wrote about Tiger Woods on here about 10 years ago. 10 YEARS! Holy cow. Anyhow: the movie Happy Gilmore is coming true; check out the proof in this recent article about Tiger Woods:

When FBR Capital Markets, an investment bank based in Virginia that lost $200 million in 2008, pulled out of its sponsorship of this year’s PGA Tour event in Scottsdale, Ariz., Finchem signed up Waste Management to take its place. The tournament is now called the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a name that can’t help but telegraph that a new kind of partner is being welcomed to the tour.

The Phoenix event is not your average golf tournament. It’s basically a sprawling frat party, complete with beer gardens and busty women in tank tops handing out discount drink coupons. On the tournament’s 16th hole, a par 3 surrounded by a grandstand that seats 15,000, golfers who fail to clear the desert shrubbery fronting the green are lustily booed. Woods has played the tournament only a handful of times, but he is nevertheless responsible for one of its more memorable moments: in 1997, his first full year as a pro, he aced the 16th hole and was approvingly showered with beer cans.

Tiger Woods Birdie Putt

The U.S. Open was this weekend. It was supposed to be done today, until Tiger Woods started putting together some ridiculous golf Saturday and today. I was watching yesterday, and Tiger was making everything. EVERYTHING. He chipped from just beyond the fringe, and the ball freaking HIT THE FLAG POLE and dropped in. That’s crazy. Makes the field he’s playing against freaked out. Anyhow, the big news today was this Rocco Mediate, who lives and breathes the U.S. Open. His is being billed as a “Cinderella Story” by the networks, because Mediate hasn’t won much in a long time and now he’s coming out of essentially nowhere to challenge, as he says, “the number one player on grass.”

Tiger Woods

Looks like he is one of the best golfers of all time

I was reading a few articles at golf.com and it is a fact; Tiger Woods is an astounding golfer. Today he added his 18th major PJA victory to his overall stats, this is an incredible achievement. After his first major victory, I thought he was just an average up-and-coming young golfer with a lot of promise. But, then I saw that Nike had a lot of foresight in making a Tiger Woods line of clothing. This kid is good. Articles discuss people like Davis Love III, one of the longest drivers in golf, consistently losing to Tiger when it comes to driving the golf ball. Tiger was shooting 10 to 20 yards longer than Davis Love III! But, Tiger says he wasn’t shooting at the top of his game. That means he can drive farther. Farther than the longest driver in golf? That might make Tiger the longest driver in golf. That is something to think about. In addition to his drives, this great golfer’s close game is astounding. This skill is what has earned Tiger his 18 big wins. I am eager to see how long this lasts, we could have a Michael Jordan caliber athlete here, you never know.
