I finished prepping a crown for a patient of mine, one who always remembers I have a young daughter and asks how she is doing; then they surprised me: gave me a little stuffed bear wearing a t-shirt from where they work. How nice! Ess likes this little bear.
It was Essie’s bedtime, and since she sleeps face down, that’s how she puts her stuffed animals to bed.
Knut the polar bear is very very cute. Born in captivity late in 2006, he was abandoned by his mother and raised by zoo keeper Thomas Dörflein:
Knut’s need for around-the-clock care required that Dörflein not only sleep on a mattress next to Knut’s sleeping crate at night, but also play with, bathe, and feed the cub daily. Knut’s diet began with a bottle of milk every two hours before graduating at the age of four months to a milk porridge mixed with cat food, vitamins, and cod liver.
A gift from Katy.
A recent book called Devices of the Soul by Steve Talbott argues how the preponderance of technology that claims to make life easier seems to, in a fundamental sense, make life harder. That, admittedly, is a rather poor exposition of the thesis… but you need know only the general idea here. Incidentally, this book is predated by a rather more famous example of a similar philosophical exploration called The Technological Society by Jacques Ellul. Basically, both works discuss the implications of “technology.” Don’t think of technology as simply computers, however. Here’s a helpful comment from the Amazon page selling The Technological Society (emphasis mine):
This gun launches pink teddy bears - Don’t worry, the attached parachute opens at the apex of the bear’s flight, preventing any injury. Apparently this is for weddings.
I think I got this when I got my tonsils out.
