The picture below is a stack of the materials I covered for 3 of my 7 classes this past fall semester. I read, generated, or memorized every single one of the pages below.
That’s 1826 pages of paper.
Now, keep in mind that I’m not saying I did anything particularly special here: all my 95 classmates had to cover the same material in the same amount of time. It’s just… a rather large stack of paper.
I’ve heard the same about Bill Watterson, Dan. However, I think it would be naïve of him to expect complete isolation from his readers. His work is universally praised by critics and fans, and a celebration of Calvin and Hobbes in cinematic form is, I think, an appropriate expression of appreciation.
I still go back and forth: the website for the film might indicate that the filmmakers interviewed Watterson (the hints they dropped are ambiguous). But, I read the Wikipedia article about him… and man oh man does he dislike interviews. I would think, however, that Watterson or his editor would send out a cease and desist type letter to the filmmakers if they were unauthorized.
I’m leaning towards contributing.
